The Terminus building hosts a new conference on the Port Line and the Palma tunnel

The talk will review the evolution of one of the most unique railway infrastructures in Ciutat

Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM) is organizing a new conference on Tuesday, October 13, at 6 p.m., in the Terminus, by the president of the Association of Amics del Ferrocarril, Miquel Àngel Riera, dedicated to the Port Line and the railway tunnel that for decades was part of the Palma network.

Under the title The dins Ciutat train: the Port Line and the Palma tunnelRiera will take a tour of the origin, evolution and main transformations of this infrastructure, as well as the role it played in the railway and urban development of the Balearic capital.

The connection to the port was created in 1877 by means of a surface layout. Almost fifty years later, in 1926, Ferrocarrils de Mallorca began the construction of a tunnel under the center of Palma, designed by military engineer Luís García Ruiz and inaugurated on February 5, 1931.

During the session, the rapporteur will explain some of the most prominent episodes related to this route, from the transport of passengers and goods to the use of different tunnel spaces as anti-aircraft shelters during the Civil War.

The talk will also address the changes that the service underwent until its definitive abolition, on December 31, 1964, and the urban transformations that subsequently affected part of the original layout.

This activity is part of the series of conferences that SFM holds at its headquarters to publicize different episodes of the history of the railway in Mallorca and to disseminate the railway and historical heritage of the Balearic Islands.
