SFM to Eliminate the Camí des Moliners Level Crossing in Santa Maria del Camí with a New Overpass
The €4.4 million project is now open for public consultation before proceeding with the next stages of the approval process
The new infrastructure will enhance safety at a crossing used daily by around 400 vehicles and 50 pedestrians
Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM) will eliminate the passage at the level of the camí des Moliners, in the municipality of Santa Maria of Camí, by constructing a new upper step on the line of train Palma-Inca, with a previewed investment of 4.4 million euros. As noted by the BOIB this Saturday, the construction project now begins the period of public information, once the technical reports necessary to continue its processing have been issued.
As of this Sunday, a 30-day period will open to consult the documentation and to be able to submit allegations. Once the period of public information has ended and the possible allegations have been studied, the administrative process necessary to be able to execute the works will continue. The basic tender budget is EUR 4,399,025.16 (VAT included) and the estimated time frame for the execution of the works is six months.
The action will make it possible to eliminate the current crossing between road traffic and the railway line and to improve the safety of both vehicles and pedestrians passing through this point and of rail traffic.
The level crossing is located at the 15+207 kilometer point, on a curved stretch with limited visibility and where trains run at a speed of up to 100 km/h. According to the last seats, each day about 400 vehicles and half a hundred pedestrians pass through this point.
This action, included in the Govern de les Illes Balears-driven "Illes en Transformació" infrastructure plan, is part of SFM's initiatives to phase out railway network steps and strengthen their safety.
A new upper step on the tracks
The new road pass will allow you to connect both sides of the Palma-Inca line without crossing the tracks. It shall consist of a raised metal bridge which shall be accessed by ramps.
The vial will have a journey of 260 meters on the current camí des Moliners and will connect with the Ma-13A. Both the ramps and the bridge will have a width of 10 meters. A 30-meter-diameter roundabout will also be built to rearrange the intersection and facilitate neighborhood access to the area.
The work will also include land movements, paving, drainage, replacement of affected services and marking needed to put the new infrastructure into service.
Towards a train network without level crossings
With the suppression of the passage at the level of the camí des Moliners, the SFM railway network will be with 23 steps at the level, 12 of which are roadways and allow the passage of vehicles. In parallel, SFM is working on the elimination of two other steps located in the municipal terms of Consell and Binissalem.
The objective of Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca is to continue to advance in the suppression of the level crossings, both road and pedestrian, in order to reduce the points of risk and to have an increasingly secure railway network.
