SFM to expand rail fleet with €63.35 million investment to increase train capacity

Two new Series 1100 trains and five additional trailer cars will increase the passenger capacity of the current Series 8100 fleet by 36%

The investment is aimed at improving the existing rail service and is separate from the future fleet expansion planned for new rail and metro lines

The Council of Government has authorised Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM) to launch the procurement process for the expansion of its rail fleet through the purchase of two new Series 1100 trainsets, five trailer cars for the Series 8100 fleet and a range of spare components. The contract has a total estimated value of €63.35 million, including VAT.

The investment responds to the steady growth in passenger demand in recent years, which is expected to continue, and will support future increases in service frequencies across the network. It is intended exclusively to strengthen the current railway service and is independent of the rail and metro expansion projects currently under development, which will have their own dedicated rolling stock procurement programmes based on the operational requirements of each project.

Annual passenger numbers have increased from around 7 million in 2022 to approximately 12 million in 2025. This sustained growth makes it necessary to increase both fleet capacity and operational availability. The investment will provide two additional trainsets, extend existing three-car trains to four-car formations and ensure sufficient rolling stock is available for maintenance requirements and operational contingencies.

The contract includes the purchase of two Series 1100 trainsets, expanding the fleet introduced into service in 2022 from five to seven units. It also includes five trailer cars for the Series 8100 fleet, enabling the current three-car trains to be extended to four-car formations. This will increase the passenger capacity of these trains by 36%.

In addition, the contract provides for the supply of four bogies and two underframes for the Series 8100 fleet, strengthening the availability of spare equipment and improving overall service reliability. It also covers the maintenance of the new rolling stock during the warranty period, technical support in the event of operational issues and all testing and commissioning required before the new trains enter passenger service.

The procurement has a total estimated value of €63.35 million, including VAT, and an implementation period of 75 months from the signing of the contract. The contract is expected to be awarded later this year.

Through this investment, the Government of the Balearic Islands continues to strengthen and modernise Mallorca's railway network, with the aim of providing a more efficient, reliable and higher-capacity public transport service that meets the island's growing mobility needs.
