Tender approved for €4.7 million electrical substation at Son Rutlan railway depot

The new facility will provide the electrical capacity needed to support future service frequency increases and enhance the reliability of the rail network.

The infrastructure will provide SFM's maintenance depot with its own dedicated power supply, improving the safety of maintenance operations.

The Council of Government has authorised Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM) to launch the tender process for the construction of a new electrical substation at the Son Rutlan railway depot. The project has a total budget of €4,705,771.47 (VAT included) and an estimated construction period of ten months.

This investment will prepare Mallorca's rail network for future growth and help meet increasing mobility needs. The additional electrical capacity will allow more trains to operate simultaneously and will support future increases in peak-hour service frequencies at Palma's Intermodal Station.

The project is also part of the ongoing modernisation of SFM's railway maintenance facilities in Palma and reflects the Balearic Government's commitment to strengthening an essential public transport service while adapting the railway network to current and future operational requirements.

The new substation will provide the Son Rutlan depot with its own dedicated power supply, independent from the system that powers train operations. This will improve safety during maintenance work and make day-to-day depot operations more efficient.

In addition, the facility will be able to provide backup power to the main railway line in the event of incidents affecting other substations, such as Son Costa or Es Caülls, helping to ensure the continuity and resilience of rail services.

The project includes the construction of the traction power substation together with the installation of all the electrical equipment and systems required for its operation. It will be built on land that was specifically reserved during the previous redevelopment of the Son Rutlan depot, anticipating the implementation of this key strategic investment for Mallorca's railway network.
