The Government awards the design contracts for the Palma–Llucmajor railway projects
With this new milestone, SFM remains on schedule for the Llucmajor railway project, with construction works expected to begin in 2028
The Government of the Balearic Islands has awarded the contracts for the preparation of the basic and detailed design projects for the future Palma–Llucmajor railway line, amounting to €3.071 million (excluding VAT). This is the first of the two contracts linked to the implementation of this railway network expansion project. With this new step, the planned timetable remains on track, with construction expected to begin in 2028.
The Board of Directors of Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM) approved the award of this contract last Friday. Once the contract has been signed, the successful contractor will have an implementation period of 22 months to complete the work, subject to the relevant project approval procedures. The procurement process for the second package is also well advanced: the contract for the overall coordination of the different contracts required to deliver the new railway line, with a base budget of €1.8 million (excluding VAT).
Following the completion of the planning stage for the new infrastructure, this first award marks the beginning of the technical development phase of the Llucmajor railway line, which will pass through around a dozen neighbourhoods and reach the municipality of Llucmajor in 30 minutes. The line will connect Palma city centre with the airport in 12 minutes and provide access to strategic locations such as Son Llàtzer University Hospital, among others.
Following the final approval of the route alignment and the successful completion of the initial environmental assessment process through the granting of the Strategic Environmental Declaration, the Government continues to move forward with this major project and enters the development phase with the award of the design contracts, maintaining the target of beginning construction works in 2028 and completing the line in 2032. The preparation of these two projects only covers the Palma–Llucmajor section of the route.
With this new milestone, the established roadmap continues to progress and all the key milestones defined when this railway project was presented, following the completion of the feasibility study, are being met. For the first time since 2007, the development of a construction project for a new railway line in Mallorca is underway.
This railway line will connect Palma and Llucmajor in 30 minutes and the airport in just 12 minutes thanks to a station located within the airport terminal itself. The route will pass through different residential areas, starting at a new station located in the area of the Higher Conservatory of Music, where the future Arts District is planned, and ensuring an appropriate connection for a future extension of the railway network towards the western area of Palma.
The line will connect strategic locations such as Son Llàtzer Hospital, S’Arenal, the industrial estates of Son Oms and Son Noguera, as well as the future Palma exhibition and fairgrounds. This expansion of the railway network will make it possible to travel from Llucmajor to the airport in 18 minutes, as well as providing connections to Son Llàtzer Hospital in 6 minutes from Palma and 23 minutes from Llucmajor.
The new infrastructure will have a total length of 30 kilometres, almost 10 kilometres of which will be underground. It will run through around a dozen neighbourhoods in Palma, some of them with a high population density. These areas include S’Olivera (Conservatori station); Son Oliva and Son Fortesa (Son Costa station); Pere Garau, La Soledat, Son Canals and Son Gotleu (Miquel Dolç station); Estadi Balear (Son Güells station); Son Ferriol (Son Llàtzer Hospital station); Coll d’en Rabassa (Coll d’en Rabassa station); and S’Arenal and Les Meravelles, in Playa de Palma (Porciúncula, Bellavista–Ses Cadenes and S’Arenal stations, the latter located within the municipality of Llucmajor).
Forecast demand is estimated at 8.5 million passengers per year, representing a 73% increase in railway ridership compared with the 11.6 million passengers recorded on the network in 2025.
The estimated total budget for the Llucmajor railway project amounts to €811 million and includes the design and construction of the future railway line, as well as the purchase of new electric trains and the construction of new maintenance facilities. This project forms part of the “Islands in Transformation” investment plan promoted by the Government of the Balearic Islands.
